Over 24 million vehicles cross the Forth each year – that’s over 70,000 vehicles each weekday.
The Forth Bridges Unit's control room staff monitor the traffic 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, ready to respond to any incidents or extreme weather.
Although the Queensferry Crossing benefits from wind shielding, extreme weather can still cause problems, so Control Room staff constantly monitor conditions to make sure safety restrictions are implemented as required.
The Forth Bridges Unit also operates a free recovery service in order to clear the carriageway and keep the traffic moving following accidents or breakdowns.
And bridge workers are on standby to de-ice the carriageway using non-corrosive chemicals during freezing weather and to lay out traffic management for maintenance works.
